Sir David Attenborough turns 100, reveals most extraordinary moment of his life

Across generations, few voices have transformed how we see and connect with the natural world quite like Sir David Attenborough. As he celebrates his 100th birthday on May 8, it also reminds of the countless experiences that he has had in the wild over many decades.
Interestingly, while there were many, there is one encounter that he reveals is particularly more memorable, it is one that stayed with him long after filming ended.
While filming gorillas in their natural habitat, what began as a routine shoot soon turned into something far more personal.
As he sat among them, a group of young gorillas approached him with ease and curiosity. They climbed onto him, sat beside him, briefly interacting with him in a way that felt natural and unforced. In that brief window, the boundary between human and animal seemed to soften.
Reflecting on the experience in `Making Life on Earth: Attenborough’s Greatest Adventure` on Sony BBC Earth, Attenborough recalls, “I honestly don’t know how long it was. I suspect it was about 10 minutes or even a quarter or one hour. I was simply transported… It was just an extraordinary acceptance.”
The moment became even more striking when an adult female gorilla gently reached out, placing a hand on his head, looking directly into his eyes, and curiously touching his face. “When I was called back, I said to myself that it was the most extraordinary moment of my life. It was wonderful.”, continues Attenborough.
In that instance, Sir David Attenborough wasn’t just observing nature, he was part of it. He has often described it as one of the most privileged experiences of his life, a rare moment of connection that went beyond words or explanation.
The story behind `Life on Earth` is as extraordinary as the wildlife it captured. Nature and wildlife lovers can watch `Making Life on Earth: Attenborough’s Greatest Adventure` as it premieres on May 8 on Sony BBC Earth at 1 pm and 9 pm.
