If you are a Mumbaikar who loves new experiences, then you have seen the evolving popularity of Mahjong in Mumbai. While it has existed for a long time among its many different communities, the game has now attracted the young and old and everybody wants to experience it.
Buildingo on this very popularity, The Mahjong Club has been opened by Aspect Hospitality in Mumbai this August as the newest eatery in Khar, above Radio Bar.
Part cafe, part Mahjong destination and, most importantly, a social hub, the new eatery is taking one of the world’s oldest and most inherently social games and giving it a new home in Mumbai.
The Mahjong Club is designed around the simple idea of bringing people together over something genuinely engaging. Mahjong brings strategy, concentration and play to the table, while naturally creating space for conversation and connection across generations. Paired with great food and warm hospitality, the club is envisioned as a place people can return to not just for the game, but for the experience of spending time together.
The game is only just beginning
At the heart of the concept is the centuries-old game of Mahjong – tactile, strategic, mentally stimulating and wonderfully social.
Four people sit around a table. The tiles begin to click. The game asks you to watch, remember, anticipate and think ahead, while conversation, competition and laughter carry on around you.
Mahjong exercises the mind without taking the pleasure out of play. It demands concentration and strategy while remaining deeply social – a game that crosses generations and genders with ease.
Experienced players can find their regular game. Beginners can learn through lessons and guided play. Younger players can discover the concentration and strategic thinking the game demands. Open play, tournaments and community events bring different players together and create the foundations of a real Mahjong community.
What’s on the menu?
The pan-Asian-inspired, health-conscious menu has been created around the natural rhythm of the Mahjong table – dishes to share, enjoy between turns and pass around the table, with enough range and substance to stand firmly on their own.
Highlights include Edamame Truffle Dim Sum, Asparagus Avocado Uramaki and Ma La Chilli Prawns, alongside Buddha Bowls and Salmon Crudo Bowls. Desserts include the Matcha & White Chocolate Cookie and Dark Chocolate Date Truffles.
The drinks programme carries the Mahjong world further. Alongside espresso and tea are signatures including the East Wind Iced Tea, Golden Tile Latte, Jade Matcha Cloud and Four Winds Coffee Tonic.
There are tables for regular players and casual drop-ins, reserved games and pre-booked groups, lessons for beginners, community events, and tournaments. Private tables and spaces allow the Club to host celebrations, group games, and intimate gatherings, as it becomes the newest eatery to open in Khar.
